Slow Progress

Happy New Year, everyone!

It's been cold...

It’s been cold…

Various things have slowed down progress. Of course there was nothing much going on over the holidays, and then we had a big snowfall and cold snap. That’s over now, but we are waiting for the special order of Sansin SDF exterior woodstain to arrive – then we can stain the rafters for the roof and get on with the roof installation. We will have to do this in a heated space because otherwise the temperatures would be too low for the stain to take and dry properly. The crew are also prepping for installation of the insulation everywhere.

We have got a few things done in the meantime:

  1. Costed and ordered the HRV and all the ducting and other bits and pieces. This will be a Zehnder Comfoair 200 based system, which we are ordering from Hans at Pinwheel.
  2. Costed and ordered hardwood flooring from out fantastic local hardwood flooring liquidators: LNG (AKA Gaylord Hardwood). We’re going to get a hard-wearing dark-stained hickory for the big downstairs room and a fairly dark beech for our room upstairs. Everywhere else we’ll use a load of natural maple we bought off a neighbour a couple of years ago.
  3. Costed tiling for the bathrooms, kitchen and entrance hall. We’re going for a really simple white bath and shower room, slate gray tiles for the entrance hall, and turquoise tiles for the kitchen to give a splash of colour in a large downstairs room that will be otherwise quite monochrome.
  4. Successfully bargain shopped for a few kitchen and bathroom things we really wanted, including the bath, shower pan and door, cooktop and kitchen sink. We are having to get these kinds of finishing touches done as cheaply as we can, so the January sales were good to us.

But there’s still a way to go before we get to the stage of having a working kitchen and bathroom!

We hope all goes well with the wood staining etc. We are looking forward to seeing the external insulation installed. Good luck with that!
